Set in the early 1990s, the novel follows Charlie, an introverted and observant child, through his freshman year of high school in a Pittsburgh suburb. The Sultan by Joan Haslip6/27/2023 ![]() There are also some very orientalist elements which would describe certain traditions in a backward and somewhat skewed manner. The only reason why I did not give it a five star rating is that, no matter how comprehensive, the author failed to take into account the testimonies of the more religious elements of Abdul Hamid's entourage to give us a better picture. ![]() The details and testimonies of the people involved really shed lights on perspectives and despite the fact Abdul Hamid II did not write his biography, Haslip tries her best to recreate the Sultans life based on third party accounts in a chronological order in each chapter with a foreshadowing of the far future, which can be easily understood by those who have a rough idea how future events would play out. ![]() On this account I would praise Joan Haslip for compiling a fair and balanced account of one of the greatest Sultans not only for the Ottoman Empire but also the one who would be considered the last effective Caliph of Islam. ![]() It is either non existent or is prejudiced account from European or Kemalist historians. It is so hard to find English material on the life of Abdul Hamid II. ![]()

The Genetic Lottery by Allison Goh6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() I wanted to create a book that showcases the excesses of human greed, power, genetic manipulation as well as conflicting feelings of family, loyalty and love. I love the dystopian genre and the social commentary that underlies every good dystopian book. Alex Etak promises to soothe the public furore and take down the genetically superior species by equipping the masses but does he have a separate agenda himself? ![]() Luckily, a revolutionary leader emerges, promising to tilt back the playing field with his cutting-edge technology, the Infinity Chip. The Genetic Lottery promises every couple a child, free from all markers of genetic disease, but the Alpha5 children have far exceeded those parameters. ![]() Not only do the public loathe them, they represent a betrayal of The Genetic Lottery, the system that forms the backbone of Egalian society. Impossibly good looking, intelligent and heirs to the biggest fortunes in Egalia, the secret of their births has caused intense backlash. The children of the Alpha5, the top 5 conglomerates in Egalia, find themselves up for public scrutiny when the news of their genetically selected origins is leaked to the public. ![]()

Tonight’s misbehaving riders-the reason Casey had been assigned the M7 bus-were the teenaged twin girls at the back. With Halloween only four days away, problems had already erupted on Mainland Public Transport buses. ![]() Tonight, her shift had been peaceful until the stink of cigarette smoke signaled trouble.
